KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 (Bernama) -- Malaysian motorsport enthusiasts travelling abroad must abide by the laws and regulations of their host countries, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said mutual respect, tolerance and an understanding of neighbouring countries' regulations were crucial to maintaining good relations among ASEAN member states.
"In my view, we must follow the rules set by whichever country we are in. We hope for mutual respect, and it is not our intention to break the law.
"There is a great deal of tolerance we can practise as ASEAN member states," he said.
Ahmad Zahid said this when met by reporters after the closing ceremony of the Negeri Sembilan Contingent Charity Ride programme with the Ipoh Super Bike Club (ISBC) in conjunction with the 219th Police Day and 69th Merdeka Eve celebrations at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters here today.
He was asked to comment on a recent incident where a group of Malaysian high-powered motorcycle riders were stopped and issued summonses by traffic police in Hat Yai, Thailand.
A video had previously gone viral on social media alleging that Thai authorities had "bullied" the group of riders.
However, Thai police denied the allegations, stating that the fines were issued for traffic violations, including the use of flashing lights and modified exhausts that exceeded permitted decibel levels.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid said the issue of foreign-registered vehicles violating traffic laws upon entering Malaysia was also being looked into.
He said any problems regarding the matter could be discussed and resolved through the Annual Consultation Meeting platform between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and other ASEAN leaders.
In another development, Ahmad Zahid commended the Charity Ride programme, which successfully raised RM102,000 with support from 53 companies. The funds will be distributed to 120 Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) families and 12 welfare homes along the convoy route.
He also expressed his intention to join a large-scale motorcycle convoy programme in conjunction with the 70th National Day and 220th Police Day celebrations next year, suggesting a participation of at least 220 riders.
