The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport noted on Sunday that one black box from the crashed plane has been found.
The Ministry said that the accident investigation committee has recovered the flight recording device.
The Ministry also pointed out that prior to the crash, the airport control tower had issued a bird strike warning to the pilot. One minute later, the pilot sent out a distress signal.
Joo Jong-hwan, Director of the Aviation Policy Office of the Ministry, stated that at around 8:57 a.m. on the day, the tower at Muan International Airport had issued a bird alert warning to the involved aircraft; just one minute later, at 8:58 a.m., the captain sent out a distress signal; around 9 a.m., the aircraft attempted to land on runway 19; around 9:03 a.m., the plane conducted a belly landing without the landing gear down and collided with the airport's perimeter wall.
The Ministry said that the aircraft initially attempted to land on runway 1 but received a bird alert warning from the tower, and soon after, the captain sent out a distress signal. At that time, the tower issued instructions to land on the opposite direction runway, which the captain accepted, leading to the accident during the landing process.
Additionally, upon arriving at the accident site, Choi Sang-mook, acting in presidential capacity, declared Muan County, where the passenger plane crash occurred, a special disaster area.
