(Sibu, 8th) Advisor of Chung Hwa Middle School Brunei, Xu Yuelan, stated that calligraphy and literature are the twin pillars of Chinese culture. In today's world, swept by the digital wave, maintaining brush, ink, paper, and inkstone, and reciting poetry and prose is not only reverence for traditional culture, but also a way to safeguard the roots of the nation.
She said that she was very honored to witness, together with people from all walks of life at Chung Hwa Middle School Brunei's Peace Hall, the grand opening of the "1st Borneo Red Wolf Cultural Festival 2026", jointly hosted by Red Wolf Media & Culture, Chung Hwa Middle School Brunei, and the Brunei Chinese Calligraphy & Painting Cultural Association.
She first welcomed the Chinese Ambassador to Brunei, Chen Shaochun, for his guidance, sent sincere greetings to the presidents of calligraphy associations, calligraphers, and experts and scholars in the literary field from Sarawak and Sabah, and also thanked Event Chairman Yang Zhensheng and the organizing team for their efforts put into this grand event.
Xu Yuelan pointed out that this year's cultural festival centers around the "Borneo Calligraphy Competition", and also links together Chinese literature seminars, an intangible cultural heritage papermaking workshop, and AI film appreciation, breaking the boundaries of traditional book exhibitions, enabling in-depth dialogue between the ancient art of calligraphy and modern technology as well as cross-domain culture. It is not only an artistic feast but also a cultural homecoming.
She said that as a century-old Chinese school, Chung Hwa Middle School Brunei has always been committed to promoting the development of Chinese education and the inheritance of Chinese culture.
"Culture only thrives through exchange; only by caring for the youth can civilization remain ever-renewed."
She said she was very gratified to see many students participate in the on-site calligraphy competition and to see artists from Brunei, Sabah, and Sarawak gather together.
She believes that such cross-regional cultural interaction will inject new vitality into Borneo's Chinese education and build a solid bridge for folk friendship among the three regions.
She also especially thanked Yang Zhensheng and his team for their tireless efforts over the years in promoting the arts of calligraphy and painting, establishing awards to encourage younger generations, and organizing events that unite people's hearts.
She said that the "Borneo Cultural Contribution Award" and the "Chinese Culture Lifetime Achievement Award" presented that day are not only recognition of individuals but also encouragement for all those overseas who steadfastly defend the frontiers of Chinese culture.
