Bengkulu Provincial Government: Developers Must Build Earthquake-Resistant Houses

(Bengkulu, 25th) The Bengkulu provincial government emphasized that all developers must ensure that the houses they build meet earthquake-resistant standards to reduce the risk of earthquakes.
"Attention developers, our area is prone to earthquakes. As a measure to reduce disaster, buildings must be constructed to meet earthquake-resistant standards," said Herwan Antoni, Acting Secretary-General of Bengkulu Province, on Sunday in Bengkulu.
He mentioned that the earthquake that occurred on Friday, May 23, 2025, serves as a valuable lesson and a wake-up call to ensure that disaster mitigation measures are implemented properly to reduce the risks of future disasters, especially earthquakes.
The Bengkulu provincial government is committed to providing the people with safe, comfortable, orderly, and secure living conditions, especially in light of the fact that the province is a disaster-prone area, including earthquakes.
"Therefore, we request all developers to ensure that the houses they build meet earthquake-resistant standards. At the same time, we also urge all builders to ensure that the foundation and structural integrity of houses meet the required standards," he said.
Previously, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) released the latest data showing that after a 6.0 magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:52 AM on May 23, 255 residential homes were damaged in Bengkulu. This data was updated as of 1 PM on Saturday, May 24.
The earthquake affected multiple areas in the Bengkulu Province, with 255 houses in Bengkulu City and Central Bengkulu Regency being damaged to varying degrees.
In Bengkulu City, 206 houses were damaged, of which 8 were severely damaged; additionally, 6 public facilities were damaged, including 2 mosques, 2 district offices, and 2 schools.
In Central Bengkulu Regency, 49 houses and 4 schools were damaged due to the earthquake tremors.
In Bengkulu City, the damage was distributed across five districts: Selebar, Gading Cempaka, Singaran Pati, Sungai Serut, and Kampung Melayu.
