Occupying Territories and Maintaining Troops: 'High-Intensity' Expansion of Military Operations in Gaza

Published at May 06, 2025 04:37 pm
Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu stated on the 5th that Israel's planned expanded military operation in Gaza will be of "high intensity."

He said that the objective of the operation is to defeat Hamas, and in the process ensure the release of captives. The Israeli military will adjust its strategy, no longer withdrawing after destroying Hamas infrastructure, "the intention now is the opposite."

According to Israeli media reports, the focus of this military operation plan will shift towards "occupying territories and maintaining a continued presence of Israeli forces in Gaza."

Netanyahu indicated that civilians in Gaza will be relocated, as a measure "to protect them."

Earlier, the Israeli security cabinet approved the plan to expand military operations in Gaza. Media reports suggest the plan is expected to be implemented after U.S. President Trump's visit to the Middle East next week.

The authorities have issued mobilization orders to "tens of thousands" of reserve soldiers to support the expanded military operations.

Additionally, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on the 5th, citing a senior Israeli official, that Netanyahu is still promoting the plan to relocate Gaza civilians to a third country and is currently in talks with multiple countries about this.

EU Expresses Concern Over Expanded Military Operations in Gaza

The EU expressed concern over the Israeli security cabinet's approval to expand military operations in Gaza and urged restraint by the Israeli side.

EU Commission spokesperson Anouni stated at a press conference on the 5th that Israel's actions will lead to more casualties and cause more suffering to Palestinians. Negotiations are the only way to achieve the release of hostages and stop all hostile actions. The EU urges Israel to lift the blockade on Gaza to allow for broad humanitarian assistance.

This year, Israel and Hamas reached a Gaza ceasefire agreement in January, but the second-phase ceasefire negotiations have stalled. Israel resumed large-scale airstrikes and ground operations against Gaza on March 18, citing Hamas's refusal to accept the U.S. government's proposed follow-up ceasefire plan and the release of Israeli detainees. The scope of operations has since continued to expand.
