Ling Si Jian Urges Authorities to Immediately Repair Canada Hill to Prevent Landslide Tragedies

(Miri, 26th) In response to frequent soil erosion and collapses along the roadsides of Canada Hill, Ling Si Jian, after receiving public complaints, recently visited the scene and pointed out that the situation is already extremely critical, urging the relevant authorities to immediately carry out emergency repair works to prevent any unfortunate incidents.

He said that he learned from local residents during Chinese New Year gatherings that whether it is the road leading to Well No. 1 or Kampung Haji Wahid, there are signs of soil erosion on both sides of the mountain road, which is very concerning.

"This situation has persisted for over a year. The authorities have only inspected and reported the case, but so far have not taken concrete action. At most, they have only installed crash barriers and laid tarpaulins, which only serve as band-aid measures and do not get to the root of the problem. These 'decorations' have been there for over a year, and the situation has not improved but in fact has become more serious, causing deep anxiety among residents."

Ling Si Jian pointed out that Canada Hill is not only home to many residents, but also a popular hotspot for hiking and attracts tourists who visit Well No. 1 and the Petroleum Museum. In view of this, he urges the authorities to immediately take remedial measures and promptly carry out emergency repairs on the collapsed road sections, so as to return a safe environment to both residents and the public.

He said that he understands the authorities convened local residents last year to brief them about soil research, but he hopes relevant departments can make the research results and recommended plans public, allowing everyone to understand the situation as well as the specifics of future repair and safety enhancement works.

"Canada Hill has experienced several accidents in the past, resulting in casualties. The government should not continue to be negligent; it must remain vigilant and take preventive actions before disaster strikes."

He noted that after personally inspecting the site, he found the collapse to be more serious than in January last year. He does not understand why not even the most basic repair works have started. Residents live in fear daily, having to use these mountain roads, which causes them much mental and physical distress.

Ling Si Jian also appealed to the authorities on behalf of the public, especially urging the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) to quickly allocate funds so that the relevant works can commence immediately.

"I will continue to stand at the forefront, voicing the concerns of the people, as always working for their welfare. I hope the authorities will speed up the repair efforts and formulate a long-term maintenance plan to ensure Canada Hill, as one of Miri’s landmarks, remains safe and secure."

He also called on citizens to recognize the importance of checks and balances, believing that those in power must be strictly supervised and held accountable, in order to better safeguard public interests.
