(Bandar Seri Begawan, 15th) A 39-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to eight months in jail after admitting last Saturday to causing property damage at the Kampong Jalan cemetery parking lot.
The defendant, Muhammad Izzat bin Haji Said, pleaded guilty to the charge of malicious damage under Section 426 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison, a fine, or both.
The incident occurred between 3:27 PM and 6 PM on April 3, when the defendant overturned six tables and smashed 40 bottles of Air Asah-asahan commonly sold near the cemetery, causing an estimated loss of BND 178.
The court was informed that the defendant violently overturned tables and threw bottles to the ground. When the owner confronted him and threatened to call the police, he fled the scene. A chase ensued between the parties, and with the help of a member of the public, the defendant was caught by one of the owners at a roundabout in the kampong. The defendant later admitted to the police that he caused the damage intentionally.
He also had prior convictions for property crimes. The magistrate previously sentenced him to 12 months in jail for this case but reduced the sentence to 8 months in light of his guilty plea.
