(Sepang, 8th) The second national car company, Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua), plans to complete the production of its first electric vehicle (EV) by October this year and aims to launch it by the end of the year.
The company’s President and CEO, Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, stated that the initial localization rate of assembly for this car would exceed 30%. It will be manufactured at the new plant in Rawang, Selangor, and priced below RM80,000.
"However, after several months of production and localization of key components, we aim to increase the localization assembly rate to over 60%." He mentioned this during a press conference after showcasing a semi-finished prototype of the electric vehicle at the Malaysian Autoshow 2025 today.
Zainal Abidin noted that the plan is to produce 500 units of the electric vehicle per month, targeting young buyers and small families, allowing them to enjoy the electric vehicle experience at an affordable price.
He emphasized that the long-term value of the electric vehicle, especially the battery quality and used car price, are key priorities.
"If people buy electric vehicles but lack confidence in the battery quality, the car's value will drop significantly after eight years.
"Therefore, we ensure that even after eight to nine years, this car will still retain its value because we strictly control the battery quality. Users can purchase new batteries from us at any time."
