(Mukah, 23rd) The Sarawak branch of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM Sarawak) has confirmed that methane gas was detected yesterday at the Oya Kaul Festival site, and the gas has been classified as flammable.
This confirmation came after strict on-site monitoring by the Bintulu Hazardous Materials Handling Unit (Hazmat).
Mukah Fire and Rescue Station Chief Nicholas Belulin stated that a total of three gas sample readings were taken to assess the level of risk in the area.

He said, "The operation team conducted tests at different times using specialized gas detectors (GFG) to ensure the accuracy of the data.
"The monitoring results showed that the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) ranged between 90% and 100%, confirming that the location is in a high-risk zone."
He further explained that although no source of fire or signs of fire were found at the site and the ground was dry, the presence of methane gas at such concentration still poses a potential threat to public safety.

He said that the site of the discovery is one of the main access routes for residents going to the Oya Kaul Festival venue, and it is also a densely populated recreational area.
The monitoring operation lasted from 10:30 am until 5:00 pm, with participation from the Bintulu Hazmat Unit, Mukah Fire and Rescue Station, and other relevant agencies.
The Fire and Rescue Department will continue periodic monitoring to ensure the safety of local residents is protected.
