According to the Malaysian Department of Statistics, Sarawak's aging population is growing at a rate higher than the national average, and it is projected that by 2028, the population over 60 will account for 16% of the total population.
Therefore, the 2025 Sarawak International Conference on Aging is seen as a proactive measure by the Sarawak government to comprehensively address this challenge.
The two-day conference will feature plenary sessions with representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), keynote addresses by the Malaysian Research Institute on Aging, and international forums with elder care experts from China, Japan, and Singapore.
Additionally, there will be multiple thematic forums covering topics such as policy, health, digitalization, personal well-being, economic empowerment, and community participation.
The 2025 Sarawak International Conference on Aging is co-hosted by the Sarawak Ministry of Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Development, the Sarawak Social Welfare Department, and the Sarawak Gerontology and Geriatrict Society. It is supported by the Sarawak Convention Bureau and various strategic partners, including the World Health Organization, MyAgeing Research Institute, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, and Sarawak and federal government agencies.
Expected attendees include representatives from government agencies, local governments, health institutions, academia, NGOs, the private sector, community leaders, caregivers, and the elderly, making the 2025 Sarawak International Conference on Aging a platform for cross-sector collaboration.
This conference is also part of the post-2030 COVID-19 pandemic development strategy and aligns with the United Nations Decade of Healthy Aging 2021-2030 initiative.
