China and Iceland have issued a joint statement to strengthen cooperation in geothermal energy and green transition.
According to China Central Television news, on the 14th, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with President of Iceland Tomasdottir at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, who was in China to attend the Global Women’s Summit.
Xi Jinping emphasized that both sides should deepen practical cooperation in areas such as economy and trade, geothermal energy, and healthcare, and work together to promote green transition and respond to climate change.
The two sides also issued the China-Iceland Joint Statement on Further Strengthening Cooperation on Geothermal Energy and Green Transition.
The statement mentioned that both sides agreed that climate change is one of the major challenges of our time, and reaffirmed their commitment to the principle of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities, and that, based on their respective national circumstances, they would safeguard and implement the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Paris Agreement.
On the basis of long-term cooperation, both sides will strengthen government-to-government and industry-to-industry cooperation, tap geothermal energy potential at global, regional, and national levels, promote the utilization of geothermal energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, advance energy transformation, create new green industries and employment opportunities, and continuously improve people’s quality of life.
Both sides will also support and promote sustainable development policies, measures and practices, develop a circular economy and sustainable green value chains, encourage green innovation and low-carbon solutions, and promote gender equality in the above processes. The two sides will jointly advance the global governance of plastic pollution.
