Switzerland to Deploy 4,000 Troops Near Border During G7 Summit in France

The Swiss government announced on the 4th that during the mid-June Group of Seven (G7) summit to be held in France, Switzerland will deploy approximately 4,000 armed forces personnel in the border areas near the venue.

The Swiss government stated that from June 15 to 17, leaders of G7 member states and some other countries will meet in Évian-les-Bains (also known as the town of Évian) on the southern shore of Lake Geneva. As the venue is located near the Swiss border, the cantonal security forces of Geneva, Vaud, and Valais face enormous challenges. To this end, the Swiss Federal Council and Parliament have approved an increase of military support.

The Swiss government pointed out that during the summit, military personnel will be responsible for protecting sensitive infrastructure such as Geneva Airport and providing support for border security. The Air Force will strengthen air patrols and, under international cooperation, implement airspace restrictions from 1:00 pm on June 10 to 3:00 am on June 18, including the deployment of anti-drone systems.

Évian-les-Bains in France faces the Swiss city of Lausanne, known as the "Olympic Capital," across Lake Geneva. Lausanne is only just over 60 kilometers from Geneva. In 2003, when the G8 summit was held in Évian-les-Bains, serious riots broke out in Geneva and Lausanne.
