(Kuching, 22nd) Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar stated that the issues between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS) should be resolved on the basis of fairness, justice, and reasonableness, and that both companies must cooperate as strategic partners to safeguard the interests of Sarawak and the nation.
He said that the federal government and the Sarawak government will continue to uphold the consensus previously reached by both parties, namely to mutually respect each other’s rights, regulations, and laws, while prioritizing cooperation to fully realize the vast potential of Malaysia’s energy sector.
“We have discussed the issues between Petronas and PETROS, and will continue to adhere to the consensus I have reached with Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari.
“That is, to respect each other’s rights, regulations, and laws, and to require Petronas and PETROS to work together to uplift the status of Sarawak and the whole of Malaysia.”
He made these remarks in his speech tonight at the 2026 Sarawak State-level Gawai Dayak Festival held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. The event was officiated by State Governor Tun Pehin Sri Wan Junaidi.
Anwar stated that both companies should focus on mutual benefits, establish close cooperative relations on a win-win basis, and seize the enormous development opportunities presented by the energy industry.
“We emphasize that whether it is Petronas or PETROS, both should focus on common interests, strengthen cooperation, and make good use of the tremendous opportunities before us.
“We hope that this issue can be resolved on the basis of fairness, justice, and reasonableness, and that both partners will work together in unity and progress in unison.”
He said that negotiations between the two sides have been progressing quite positively in recent times.
“I have already received the latest report, and Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister of Plantation and Commodities Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan has also provided assistance via the established technical committee.
“I hope that in the near future, Petronas and PETROS will be able to formally reach a final agreement and jointly enhance the economic status of Sarawak and Malaysia.”
Anwar pointed out that Malaysia’s energy sector possesses vast development potential, and as long as all parties focus on cooperation rather than disputes, it can become an important driver for national economic growth.
He also emphasized that Malaysia continues to be regarded by the international community as a peaceful, stable country with clear economic policies, which helps bolster the confidence of international investors and trade partners.
“We must ensure that this effort succeeds, because the potential it contains is enormous.”
