(Miri, 19th) – The Miri Teochew Association Youth Wing hosted the '2026 National Academic Competition' Miri Regional Competition, initiated by the Federation of Teochew Associations Youth Wing of Malaysia and organized by the Miri Teochew Association Youth Wing, at Miri Chung Hua (National Type) Secondary School (Miri Chung Hua) this morning. The event attracted about 450 students, receiving an enthusiastic response.

This competition included the 49th Chinese Calligraphy Competition, the 48th Art Competition, the 45th Chinese Essay/Writing Competition, and the 35th Chinese Hard Pen Calligraphy Competition. Each event was divided into Lower Primary, Upper Primary, Junior High, and Senior High groups.

The opening ceremony was held at 8:30 am and was originally scheduled to be officiated by Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak’s Minister of Transport. However, due to official duties, he was unable to attend; the ceremony was officiated by Temenggong Yang Hui Sheng as his representative, who announced the formal start of the competition after the ceremony.

The event’s organizing committee chairman, Yao Yi Song, said in his speech that today's competition is not just a contest, but also an important platform for students to showcase their talents and learn from each other.

He said that the competition continues to receive strong support from schools, with the number of participants increasing year by year—reaching 450 this year. The result is encouraging and shows that Chinese art education continues to receive emphasis.

He pointed out that the purpose of organizing academic competitions is to enhance students’ abilities in hard pen calligraphy, Chinese calligraphy, essay writing, and art, while cultivating students’ interest in and commitment to Chinese culture.

Yao Yi Song also encouraged participating students to approach the competition with a calm mind, to value the process of learning and growth over the pursuit of rankings. He emphasized that all works will be judged by professional judges and that feedback will help students continuously improve and enhance their skills.

He also thanked Miri Chung Hua (National Type) Secondary School for providing venue support, the Youth Wing planning team for their cooperation, and the sponsors, committee members, and association members for their support, which enabled the smooth running and continuous improvement of the event each year.

He hopes that students will showcase their talents, compete with confidence and high standards, and together promote the inheritance and development of Chinese culture through the competition.
