(Venezuela, 11th) Venezuelan opposition leader Machado hinted that she might award the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to U.S. President Trump. The Norwegian Nobel Institute pointed out in response that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be transferred, shared, or revoked.
Reuters reported that on Friday (Jan 9), the Norwegian Nobel Institute issued a statement, noting that according to the Nobel Foundation’s charter, decisions regarding the awarding of Nobel Prizes are final and permanent and may not be appealed.
Furthermore, after the announcement of the laureate, the awarding committee will not make any comments regarding the recipient’s conduct or statements.
The institute said: “Once the Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. The decision is final and will remain so forever.”
On Monday (5th), Machado said in an interview with Fox News that transferring the prize to Trump would be an expression of gratitude from the Venezuelan people for Trump’s role in ousting Venezuelan President Maduro.
Trump has long sought to win the Nobel Peace Prize, often linking his diplomatic achievements to such ambitions. He stated that if Machado were to bring up this proposal during their planned meeting in Washington next week, he would be “deeply honored” to accept the prize.
Machado is a former member of the Venezuelan National Assembly, but was barred from running in the 2024 presidential election by authorities aligned with Maduro. She supported a candidate widely believed to have won the election, despite Maduro’s claims of victory. Independent observer audits of the vote count revealed irregularities in the official results.
