(Bandar Seri Begawan, 26th) Since the middle of this month, the Royal Brunei Police Force has successfully arrested 13 suspects involved in cable theft and the purchase of stolen goods from multiple regions.
The Burglary and Car Theft Investigation Unit, under the Criminal Investigation Department, arrested two local male suspects aged 30 and 32 respectively in Bandar Seri Begawan in mid-April. They are suspected of stealing and damaging Unified National Network (UNN) cables inside a building in the area.
Upon investigation, a 39-year-old foreign male was arrested on April 20th this year, suspected of purchasing the stolen cables.
On the 13th of this month, Bangar Police Station in Temburong District arrested a 41-year-old local man and a 39-year-old local woman near SHOAS Bridge. Police found several metal blocks and a roll of cable wire in their car. Investigations revealed that they had stolen cables belonging to UNN from the area near Kampong Bangar.
On the 17th of this month, Berakas Police Station arrested two foreign male suspects aged 38 and 39. The two suspects are construction workers at a project site and are suspected of stealing copper and iron from the construction site while working alone.
On the 23rd of this month, two local men aged 34 and 46 were arrested in Belait District, suspected of stealing and selling cables in the Belait and Brunei-Muara areas.
On the 24th of this month, three men and one woman (aged about 34 to 51) were arrested in an apartment complex on suspicion of cable theft. This arrest operation is part of a comprehensive crackdown led by the Central Public Security Department (USPRCK) since last year, with full support from police stations in all regions nationwide.
The close cooperation among law enforcement agencies at all levels reflects the police's determination to combat cable theft crimes that affect the nation's public infrastructure.
The police remind the public to call the 993 hotline to report any suspicious activity. At the same time, the police urge recycling businesses to actively cooperate and, upon receiving metal materials of suspicious origin (such as copper), immediately report to the relevant authorities. Enterprises that receive stolen goods without taking appropriate measures will face corresponding actions. According to Section 411 of the Penal Code (Chapter 22), the crime of receiving or storing stolen goods is punishable by up to three years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. If the criminal act affects public infrastructure, the prison sentence may be extended to ten years.
