(Bandar Seri Begawan, 6th) Dr. Mohamad Maliki Osman, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office of Singapore and Second Minister for Education and Foreign Affairs, expressed that he was deeply impressed by the Bruneian Sultan's affection and care for his citizens. He met and greeted the Sultan's subjects at the open house of Istana Nurul Iman during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

He made these remarks during an interview at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house event organized by the Singapore High Commission in Brunei at the Empire Hotel and Country Club. Recalling his four-day visit to Brunei to celebrate Hari Raya, he mentioned it was his 14th time celebrating the festival in Brunei.

“Every visit reveals the country's beauty. Coming to Brunei and seeing how people celebrate Hari Raya is always enlightening yet humbling.”

He noted that Brunei’s community and family harmony, and seeing His Majesty the Sultan always prepared to meet all his subjects, left a deep impression. During COVID-19, due to restrictions, the Sultan also canceled related events.

He stated, this year I returned to Brunei and saw His Majesty the Sultan reopen the palace, and was touched by His Majesty's love for the Bruneian people. I also feel that Bruneians are lucky to have such a caring monarch. Coming back to Brunei to celebrate Hari Raya this year is particularly meaningful to me.

When asked about his favorite food at the Hari Raya open house, he said it was kelupis (glutinous rice cake).

“This year, I’ve tasted many types of kelupis. No matter the type, the kelupis here are very soft. It’s truly an unforgettable food whenever I come to Brunei.”

“Looking ahead, we can bring young Bruneians and Singaporeans together to continue building close relationships. By investing in these relationships at a young age, when they grow up, they’ll better understand the significance of these relationships and continue to build good relationships in the future.”

Meanwhile, Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Transport and Law Amrin Amin, a member of the visiting delegation, also shared his unforgettable experience at the open house in Istana Nurul Iman.

The minister also explained opportunities to further expand Brunei and Singapore's diplomatic relations. He said there are new opportunities in the field of economic cooperation, as Singapore currently imports goods from Brunei, and there is still room for further strengthening economic cooperation. Secondly, we can consider cooperation in the tourism sector so that tourists from Singapore can be brought to Brunei to enjoy its scenery, such as eco-tourism, one of Brunei’s most interesting attractions.

This was his first time visiting Brunei as part of a delegation. He stated, “I am honored to attend the Hari Raya open house at Istana Nurul Iman and have an audience with His Majesty the Sultan. We saw many people queuing to convey their wishes to His Majesty and the royal family. His Majesty patiently greeted everyone. It was a very warm moment and a good start to visit Brunei during Hari Raya.”

During the visit, he said, “I witnessed firsthand that this visit emphasized the warm relationship between Brunei and Singapore on multiple levels. Personally, I tasted several pastries in Brunei, and I will definitely bring back many precious memories.”
