Yu Xiaoshan: Unity and Harmony Are Most Precious – Urges Cherishing Sarawak’s Stable Development

(Miri, 13th) Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Piasau Branch chairman and Miri mayor, Yu Xiaoshan, stated that the most precious asset in Sarawak is not oil, natural gas, or natural resources, but the unity and harmony that all ethnic groups have maintained together over a long period.

He pointed out that resources, once lost, can be rebuilt, but if harmony is lost, everything is lost; therefore, people must cherish the hard-won current social stability and multicultural inclusiveness.

He expressed these sentiments last night at the “Celebrate 2026 Hari Raya with YB Yu Xiaoshan” event held at the parking lot in front of the SUPP Piasau Branch service center.

He said that Hari Raya is not just a celebration, but also reminds people of the importance of cherishing gratitude, self-reflection, and maintaining unity. In Sarawak, different ethnic groups can mutually respect and live harmoniously together—this is the state’s greatest strength.

"We can share a table, eat together, laugh together—this harmony did not happen naturally, but is the fruit of everyone’s collective effort and long-term nurturing."

Yu Xiaoshan noted that some parts of the world suffer due to political instability, negatively affecting livelihoods; thus, Sarawak insists on the principle of “stability first, then development.” Only in a stable environment can we promote construction, improve living standards, and more effectively assist the people.

He also mentioned that in recent years, topics related to the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), Sarawak’s rights, and autonomy have attracted significant attention. These are not new demands, but rights that Sarawak has had since the formation of Malaysia.

"Sarawak joined Malaysia as an equal partner, not as an ordinary state, so what we do now is simply to reclaim the rights we deserve."

He said that this effort is to ensure more local resources benefit the people, to make decision-making better fit the local situation, and to create a better future for the younger generation.

"When Sarawak is strong, the people’s lives will be more secure. Our efforts today are for the long-term development of future generations."
He called on the public not to be easily swayed by divisive sentiments, nor let emotions dominate their judgement, but instead to continue supporting stability, defending Sarawak’s rights, and working together towards a better future.

He emphasized that the evening’s event was not a political occasion, but a moment for community gathering, hoping that people would use this opportunity to promote exchange, strengthen friendships, and jointly safeguard social harmony.
