Hailai Amu Jokes that Malaysia is a Land of Blessings: 'If I Come a Few More Times, I’ll Get Even More Popular!'

Chinese folk singer Hailai Amu returned to Malaysia after a year to hold another concert. He joked that he has a special connection with Malaysia, with many of his 'first times' happening here, and humorously said, “If I come to Malaysia a few more times, I will definitely get more and more popular!” The concert coincided with International Women's Day, and during the song request segment, he specifically let female fans make song requests, and even added an extra performance of 'Mama' for all the women present, wishing everyone a happy holiday.

On the night of the 8th, Hailai Amu held his 'Better to Meet' 2026 tour Kuala Lumpur stop at the Bukit Jalil Axiata Arena. This was his second time performing in Malaysia, and from “the mountain top” to the large-scale indoor arena “down the mountain,” he opened with “The One Who Requests Songs,” igniting the atmosphere as soon as he started singing.

After performing “Smoke and Rain in the Mortal World,” he shared on stage about his connection with Malaysia, where many important “first times” happened. “My first overseas performance was in Malaysia, and the first stop of this year’s world tour abroad is here, too. Last year, right after I performed at the Spring Festival Gala, my first overseas show was in Malaysia. This year, I just finished the Spring Festival Gala again, and here I am in Malaysia once more.” He laughed, saying it looked like a deliberate arrangement—but was really just a coincidence. However, he particularly likes the number “1”: “One means Number One, it means champion, so I think if I come to Malaysia more often, I’ll surely get more and more popular, right?” He joked that since fate keeps bringing him here, he would return to Malaysia more often to meet fans and sing for them.

(Right) While performing 'Three Lives Three Happiness,' Hailai Amu walked off the stage, made his way through the arena, and shook hands with fans at close range. His kind gestures to fans drew loud screams.
At the concert, Hailai Amu also demonstrated his versatility. He played the guitar, beat a big drum, and played the piano live on stage. When singing 'No Mention at All,' he even showed off a segment of Chinese opera singing, stunning the audience. He humbly joked, “The biggest mistake I’ve ever made in this life is writing a bunch of songs that I can’t even sing myself.” Yet, whenever he performed popular songs like 'Your Mountains and Rivers,' 'Farewell Friend,' 'Better to Meet,' 'Xilou's Sons and Daughters,' and 'Fifty Years Later,' the whole audience sang along, creating a lively atmosphere.

Returning to Malaysia after a year, Hailai Amu was clearly slimmer and also seemed more relaxed and humorous. Before performing 'Three Lives Three Happiness,' he announced he would step off the stage to interact with the audience and told everyone to get ready to record with their phones: “You have to tell everyone I’m a particularly humorous and charming man.” He then sang while walking through the arena, shaking hands with fans, even kissing a fan’s hand, and taking selfies with their phones—sparking screams with his gestures of affection towards his fans.

Near the end of the concert, Hailai Amu gave about six minutes of a song-and-dance medley, blending 'Dreamer,' 'Wanderer’s Heart,' and 'Let’s Dance,' showing off his stage charisma. He danced and sighed: “Being an artist is really not easy. There’s so much to learn. Clearly I’m a guitar player, but I still have to dance a bit.”

Since the event coincided with International Women's Day, he specifically let female fans make the song requests during the request segment. Two lucky fans—one from Kedah and another from China—chose “The Passing Evening Breeze” and “Sister’s Wine” respectively. Hailai Amu interacted with them both on and off stage with great humor, drawing continuous laughter from the crowd. Afterwards, he surprised the audience by singing “Mama,” sending his heartfelt wishes to every woman present.

Hailai Amu’s music is closely tied to his personal experiences, making this concert not just a singing performance, but a telling of his life story. He confessed his passion for singing and truly enjoys the songwriting process, thanking the fans who have supported him all the way. “Today is my 35th concert. Thank you all for your support along the way, and thank you for buying every single ticket. I’ll never forget this feeling—without you, there wouldn’t be Hailai Amu.”

During the encore, he changed into a black, diamond-studded suit and performed three signature songs: “Only Passing Through the Mortal World,” “Xilou’s Sons and Daughters,” and “Fifty Years Later,” which erupted again into an audience-wide singalong. After finishing the finale, “Fifty Years Later,” he knelt on stage to thank his fans, loudly declaring, “Thank you Malaysia! Wishing everyone a safe journey home.”
