BINTULU,29 July: Starting next year, Sarawakian children will be able to enjoy free higher education at state-owned institutions, an approach described as inclusive and progressive by Tanjong Batu assemblyman, Johnny Pang Leong Ming.

According to him, the implementation of this policy proves the Sarawak government’s commitment to ensuring fair and quality access to higher education without discrimination, including for graduates of the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) from Chinese Independent Secondary Schools.

“This is proof that the state government is serious about investing in the future of Sarawak’s children. No one should be left behind just because of a different educational background,” he said during a school bag handover ceremony for 125 students of Kai Dee Secondary School here yesterday (Monday).

The free education initiative involves state-owned higher learning institutions such as Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, Curtin University Malaysia, University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and i-CATS University College.

He added that the courses offered covered critical areas such as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Medicine, Law, Accounting and Finance.

“We are not only providing access but also emphasising quality. We aim to produce doctors, engineers, tech experts and future leaders of Sarawak,” he said.

He further noted that the recognition of UEC graduates reflected the state government’s approach in valuing educational diversity and upholding the ‘Sarawakian’ spirit regardless of ethnicity or educational stream.

“This is a bold and visionary move. We want all young people to feel they are part of the state’s development,” he said.

The Tanjong Batu assemblyman also expressed his commitment to strengthening the education sector in his constituency through various initiatives including disseminating information about the free education policy down to the grassroots level.

“I don’t want any child in Tanjong Batu to be left out simply because he/she is unaware of this opportunity. It is my responsibility to ensure this information reaches the community and is fully utilised,” he added.
