On June 2, a bridge under construction in Yancheng City, Jiangsu Province, China, collapsed, causing multiple people to fall into the water. Currently, 2 people have died and 3 are missing.

The Xiangshui County government of Yancheng City reported on the 3rd that at 5:46 p.m. on the 2nd, the Yuegang Bridge on the Lianshen Line, which was being constructed by the China Railway 12th Bureau, suffered a tie-rod arch beam collapse during construction. A video posted online shows a bridge under construction collapsing, with a construction vehicle flipped on the broken bridge segment, and wood and other construction materials floating on the water. Someone can be heard saying, “The Yuegang Bridge is broken.” In another video, a man shouts: “This is terrible, hurry and go down to save people.”

Several people who fell into the water at the scene of the accident have been rescued, and search and rescue operations are still ongoing.

According to Southern Metropolis Daily, on November 29 last year, the official “Yancheng Release” account posted that the scene of the bridge construction in Xiangshui was bustling with activity. The main span of the Yuegang Bridge, which is 95 meters long, was almost completed and looked like a giant dragon lying across the Tongyu River. The crescent-shaped tied-arch bridge was also about to be completed, with plans to begin arch beam hoisting operations in the near future.
