Regretful of Marrying Chung Chun-toh at 24 Due to Love-blinded Youth: Shirley Cheung Laments Ex-husband for Hindering Her from Seeing Family

Published at Jan 16, 2026 04:47 pm
62-year-old Shirley Cheung's life story is quite spectacular. As a beloved daughter from a wealthy family, she never had to work or worry about money before marriage. She loved endlessly shopping for luxury goods and jewelry, had a unique sense for fashion, and even married Hong Kong star Kenny Bee (Chung Chun-toh). Together, the couple appeared on programs and released albums, enjoying the celebrity lifestyle. But in the end, the two men by her side—Kenny Bee and Chen Yaomin—both went bankrupt, giving her the label of "Hong Kong's No.1 Gold Digger". However, in recent years, she started her own brand and, relying on her impeccable taste, began selling products on Xiaohongshu, turning her life around. Recently, she appeared on host Chen Luyu’s talk show, where she seldom talked about her ex-husband Kenny Bee and revealed her heartbreak and longing for her two children, with whom she has grown distant.

At 24, in her most naïve and pure years, Shirley Cheung married Kenny Bee. She said she was a true hopeless romantic, insisting on marrying for love despite her parents' objections. In the end, it led to divorce. She stated that if she could say something to her past self, she would advise herself not to rush into the shackles of marriage so early: “See more of the world, because the most painful thing is a life without choices.”

Shirley Cheung and Kenny Bee have two children: Chung Ka-chun and Chung Ka-ching, now 35 and 30 years old. After the divorce, both children stayed with their father, leading to a drift in her relationship with them. She feels that the hardest part of the divorce was the inability to let her children grow up in a complete family and said it wasn’t that she didn’t love them, but that her visitation rights were taken away. She admitted to not being a qualified mother but insisted she had her reasons. However, her children have never forgiven her. Her daughter Chung Ka-ching once said, "Mommy Fan (referring to Kenny Bee’s second wife Fan Jiang Su-zhen) loves me more,” while her son also stated he had cut ties with the Cheung family.

After her divorce, she had to support herself by opening a clothing store and was busy making a living. She finally got a day off at Christmas and booked a room at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in hopes of reuniting with her family. But after waiting all day, she couldn't reach them, not even by phone, and ended up breaking down in tears. She said this was the only time she wept so hard after the divorce.
