Agreement Framework Set for Greenland, Trump Will Not Impose Tariffs on Eight European Countries

On the 21st, U.S. President Trump stated that he has already established a framework with NATO Secretary General Rutte for a future agreement regarding Greenland, and as a result, will not implement the planned tariff increases on eight European countries that were set to take effect on February 1.

Trump met with Rutte during the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland that day.

He later posted on social media that the two sides have "formulated the framework for a future agreement concerning Greenland and even the entire Arctic region," and that, if this solution is ultimately reached, it will greatly benefit the United States and other NATO member states.

Trump pointed out that, based on this understanding, he will not implement the previously scheduled tariff measures set to take effect on February 1.

He stated that further discussions are underway regarding the "Golden Dome" missile defense system being built by the U.S., which involves Greenland. U.S. Vice President Vance, Secretary of State Rubio, and Presidential Envoy Witkoff will be in charge of negotiations.

Later, in an interview with CNBC, Trump said that the framework agreed to that day covers both the "Golden Dome" missile defense system and mining rights, and the agreement will be in effect "forever."

On the 17th, Trump announced on social media that, starting February 1, he would impose a 10% tariff on eight European countries that opposed the U.S. acquisition of Greenland.
