(Bangkok, 23rd Comprehensive News) The Bangkok city government of Thailand will launch a city-wide safety inspection of old buildings to prevent similar building collapses from happening again. Previously, a canopy collapse at an old building in Samphanthawong District resulted in the unfortunate death of an elderly man.
Bangkok Municipal Secretary Narong stated that the authorities will establish a special task force to comprehensively assess building safety conditions, and will coordinate with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Public Works Department, district offices, the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning, as well as the Engineering Institute of Thailand to carry out joint inspections.
He said that the inspection will focus on buildings showing signs of aging, as well as old buildings with similar structural characteristics, especially those equipped with external canopies, beams, and other exposed structures.
Narong pointed out that the authorities will also establish a building inspection database, classifying buildings by risk level to serve as an important reference for formulating future safety measures.
For buildings identified as having safety hazards, owners will receive repair notices according to the "Building Control Act" and must carry out repair works as soon as possible.
At 9:13 a.m. on Tuesday (23rd), Phra Nakhon Fire and Rescue units reported that a partial collapse of a concrete canopy occurred at an old building on Dinso Road, Phra Nakhon District, near the well-known restaurant Krua Apsorn.
Fortunately, the incident did not cause any casualties. Preliminary investigations revealed that the collapsed section was the third-floor canopy, which showed signs of sagging but remained attached to the main building structure. The building is currently unused.
After the incident, authorities sealed off the site and launched further inspection and repair work.
As for the century-old building canopy collapse that occurred last Saturday in Samphanthawong District, resulting in one death, the five terraced houses involved at the scene remain closed to the public to allow for ongoing safety inspections.
