Late Night Ambush on Route 410 in Betong: Terrorists Block Road and Torch Cargo Truck

(Thailand, 28th) Another terrorist attack occurred late at night on the 26th in Yala province, southern Thailand. A group of terrorists dressed in Ranger military uniforms openly blocked a section of the Yala-Betong road (commonly known as Route 410), intercepted a truck carrying food and daily necessities, and set it ablaze!

Although there were no casualties, the incident once again highlights the severity of the security crisis in southern Thailand.

According to a police report, the incident occurred at around 11:10 PM on June 26th. Police in Bannang Sata district, Yala province, received a report from the village security volunteer team (Chor Ror Bor) stating that about 8 to 10 terrorists, dressed in black clothing, wearing black masks and gloves, tactical vests, and armed with long guns, drove four vehicles to block Route 410, on the section heading towards Betong.

The incident took place near a mosque’s curved bridge area, close to Ban Kasod village in Bannang Sata district.

At the time, a 10-wheeled truck from a logistics company, transporting goods from Bangkok via Hat Yai to Betong, was carrying 250 bags of white rice, daily necessities, and dry food.

When the truck arrived at the scene, the attackers immediately used four vehicles to ambush it from the front and back, with two vehicles blocking the front and two blocking the rear, forcing the truck to stop and ordering the driver and another person to get out.

The attackers then set fire to the truck. The blaze quickly got out of control and began to spread, with several explosions heard during the incident. It is initially believed that the explosions came from the fuel tank or tires detonating under extreme heat. The entire truck was ultimately destroyed.

After the crime, the terrorists split into four cars and escaped the scene, with two vehicles fleeing towards Betong, and the other two heading back toward Bannang Sata. No one was injured or killed during the incident, but a truck full of essential supplies was destroyed, causing a clear impact on local supply and morale.

After the incident, military, police, and administrative units immediately sealed off the area, suspended traffic, and allowed the bomb disposal unit, forensic personnel, and related authorities to enter the scene for a detailed investigation and evidence collection, to ensure the safety of the site and to track down those involved.

Initial investigations indicate that authorities believe the attack was orchestrated by an active local terrorist organization. The motive was not only to create unrest, but also to deliberately demonstrate their destructive capability, sending a provocative message to society and the government, while undermining public confidence in local security.

Of particular concern is that Route 410 is a major transportation artery connecting Yala and Betong, and one of the most important routes for Malaysian tourists traveling by land to southern Thailand.

This highway is famous for its winding mountain scenery and continuous hairpin turns, and has long been popular among self-driving tourists and motorcycle enthusiasts, making it a well-known scenic route in Thailand’s south.

This attack occurring on a road frequently traveled by international tourists has once again raised concerns over local tourism safety and the stability of cross-border transportation.
