(Phetchabun, 19th) During the Songkran Festival, a rare bird has been spotted in Thailand's Kaeng Krachan National Park—a 'Large-eared Nightjar' seldom seen in the wild has appeared by the roadside, drawing enthusiastic attention from tourists and photography enthusiasts.

The director of Kaeng Krachan National Park, Mongkhon, pointed out that this Large-eared Nightjar was recently discovered perching on a tree branch along the road to Khao Phanoen Thung, near the Ban Krang Camp area. Its position was close to the roadside, allowing visitors to observe its appearance at close range.

It is understood that the Large-eared Nightjar is the largest nightjar species in Thailand. Its most distinctive feature is its upright head feather tufts, resembling ears or small horns, along with brownish-grey plumage that allows it to blend perfectly with dead leaves and vine-covered surroundings, giving it powerful camouflage abilities.

This bird is usually nocturnal and adept at hiding during the day. Therefore, its long stay on an open branch in daylight this time is regarded as an extremely rare sight.

With the related photos spreading on social media, this Large-eared Nightjar quickly went viral, attracting many tourists and nature lovers, who originally came to see butterflies, to specifically come and catch a glimpse of it—especially among photographers, interest was strong.

Many people flocked to the Stream 2 area to watch and photograph the bird; the scene was orderly, with visitors voluntarily lining up for their turn to take photos. Long lines of cars formed along the roadside as people kept a respectful distance, entering the photography spot in an organized manner to avoid disturbing this rare and hard-to-see bird.
