(Bandar Seri Begawan, 22nd) Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Chen Shaochun expressed his pleasure at gathering with everyone to jointly attend the opening ceremony of the 'Tides of the East: Poetic Images of Zhejiang (Brunei)' themed special exhibition in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei. First of all, on behalf of the Chinese Embassy in Brunei, I would like to extend warm congratulations on the opening of the themed exhibition and express my heartfelt thanks to people from all walks of life in both countries who have made dedicated efforts to prepare for this exhibition!
The Ambassador said, ‘Tide’ is a natural phenomenon of the ocean, and can also symbolize the trends and states of social or cultural transformation and development. China and Brunei are friendly neighbors facing each other across the sea, and the ancient Maritime Silk Road has closely linked the two countries. The ebb and flow of the tides over thousands of years have witnessed the flourishment and vitality of China-Brunei friendship brought by the sea.
The Ambassador stated that today’s special exhibition comes from the banks of the Qiantang River and the coast of the East China Sea, under the name ‘Tides of the East.’ Using poetry, painting, and other forms as the medium, it showcases the profound marine cultural heritage and the advanced modern marine economy of Zhejiang, initiating a cross-temporal and cross-spatial dialogue on oceanic civilization between China and Brunei. This is highly significant for promoting the spirit of the Maritime Silk Road and deepening the cultural and people-to-people exchanges and cooperation between China and Brunei.
Ambassador Chen Shaochun made these remarks at the opening ceremony of the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei and the ‘Tides of the East: Poetic Images of Zhejiang (Brunei)’ themed exhibition.
This year marks the start of China's 15th Five-Year Plan. China is accelerating its high-quality development, actively expanding high-level opening-up, and is committed to deepening high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road cooperation with neighboring countries including Brunei, providing more development opportunities for all countries. Zhejiang is an important window of China's opening-up to the outside world and is striving to write a new chapter of Chinese-style modernization in Zhejiang.
The Ambassador said that in terms of exchanges and cooperation with Brunei, Zhejiang is at the forefront among Chinese provinces and cities. Hengyi Petrochemical is a flagship project of joint Belt and Road cooperation between China and Brunei, making significant contributions to Brunei’s economic diversification, with the second phase of the project being steadily advanced. This time, Zhejiang has come to Brunei to hold a special exhibition, reflecting the high importance China’s various localities and departments attach to developing China-Brunei relations, and demonstrating the strong momentum of people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two sides.

The Ambassador said, ‘Civilization becomes colorful through exchange and enriched through mutual learning.’ President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Civilization Initiative, advocating respect for the diversity of world civilizations and emphasizing that different civilizations should engage in exchange and dialogue with mutual respect to achieve common development while seeking common ground and reserving differences. China is willing to work hand in hand with Brunei under the guidance of the Global Civilization Initiative, deepen civilizational exchanges and mutual learning, write more friendly stories of profound fusion and harmonious coexistence between the two countries' civilizations, and make new and greater contributions to the building of a China-Brunei community with a shared future.
The Ambassador concluded by wishing the event a complete success!
