On July 31, U.S. President Trump signed an executive order to implement 'reciprocal tariffs' on 92 global trading partners, ranging from 10% to 41%, effective August 7.

The White House indicated that all goods deemed to be evading applicable tariffs through transshipment will be subject to an additional 40% tariff. The newly announced rates will apply to goods entering the U.S. at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time or later on August 7, seven days after the executive order is signed.

In a statement from the White House, the highest 'reciprocal tariff' rate is imposed on Syria at 41%; Switzerland and Myanmar are at 39% and 40% respectively; South Africa at 30%; Taiwan at 20%; Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan at 19%; the UK at 10%. The tariff rates for most countries and regions are set at 15%, including Japan, South Korea, Israel, Turkey, New Zealand, Cameroon, Chad, and others.

For EU countries, if the current tariff is lower than 15%, it will be raised to 15%; if it is above 15%, it will not be increased further. For countries or regions not listed in the executive order, a baseline tariff rate of 10% is set, including Australia.

Increase in Canadian Tariff Rate

Trump also signed an executive order raising the tariff rate on Canadian goods entering the U.S. from 25% to 35% effective August 1.

Earlier, he had issued warnings after Canada announced plans to recognize the State of Palestine.

On the social media platform 'Truth Social', he said: 'Wow! Canada just announced its support for the State of Palestine. This will make it very hard for us to reach a trade deal with them. Oh, Canada!!!'

Brazil Faces Highest Overall Tariff

In addition, according to another executive order Trump signed on July 30, a 40% ad valorem tariff will be imposed on Brazilian exports to the U.S. starting August 6, except for airplanes, nuts, orange juice, and certain metal products from Brazil, which will be exempt. After this measure takes effect, the majority of Brazilian goods exported to the U.S. will face a tariff rate raised to 50%.

Tariffs to Make America Great and Prosperous Again

Trump posted that the comprehensive tariff measures implemented on countries around the world are making America 'great and prosperous again.'

He said: 'Tariffs are making America great and prosperous again. A year ago, America was a lifeless country, but now it is the “hottest” country in the world.'
