Following his debut dance track ‘The Legendary Teacher’, Singapore’s comedy king Mark Lee has released his second solo single, ‘Life’, singing in Hokkien to express insights gained at this stage of his life. The song is written and composed by Roy Kee and produced by him as music director. Its sincere melody and deep emotions portray the gentleness and resilience of a man weathered by time.
Mark Lee shared that inspiration struck while he was sitting alone on his balcony one day—he realized he shouldn’t linger in the youthful memories of ‘Young Hero,’ but should instead capture his present self with a new song: “I’ve gone through so many rights and wrongs, ups and downs; all these experiences have shaped who I am now.”
Unlike the rock style of ‘Young Hero’, ‘Life’ is more restrained and moving. He especially challenged himself to sing in a higher register, to convey the depth and strength of men’s emotions: “I recorded it repeatedly, just to express that natural emotional outburst.”
The MV features Lai Hong En and Wang Qi Jun playing the protagonist at his youth and middle age, telling a story of striving for family and livelihood. The ‘she’ who appears in the video is none other than Mark Lee’s wife. “She has always been my strongest pillar.” Through the song, Mark expresses gratitude to his wife and to friends who have supported him all the way.
He admits that both the song and its cover contain a sense of hard-won happiness: “Happiness is actually quite simple—as long as you learn to let go of obsessions and see things openly. Having loved ones by your side is the greatest fulfillment.” Thus, ‘Life’ is not only Mark Lee’s personal voice, it also reflects the understanding and struggles many people face in life. He smiles and says: “This isn’t just my story, but feelings that everyone would share.” He also hints that another new song themed around the power of nature is coming, hoping to spread positivity: when life is no longer crowded, happiness will have space to draw near.
The MV for ‘Life’ officially premiered at noon on October 16. You are welcome to watch it at:
