(Indonesia, 13th) Indonesia’s Bali held a memorial event on Sunday to mark the 23rd anniversary of the 2002 bombing attack. Some foreign tourists and local residents scattered flower petals in front of the victims’ memorial in Kuta to mourn those who tragically lost their lives in the terrorist attack.
The Bali bombing was the worst terrorist attack in Indonesia’s history, causing more than 200 deaths, most of whom were Australian tourists. On Sunday (October 12th), New South Wales in Australia also held a memorial ceremony, releasing 88 doves to honor the deceased.
On October 12, 2002, two nightclubs at Kuta Beach, Bali, were struck by suicide bombers, resulting in 202 deaths. Of these, 164 were foreign tourists, including 88 Australians and seven Americans, with more than 330 others injured. The masterminds behind this tragedy were the Indonesian branch of al-Qaeda, Jemaah Islamiyah. Several leaders involved in the attack were later arrested. The Jemaah Islamiyah group was disbanded in July last year.
