On the 8th, United Nations Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement welcoming the relevant parties' agreement on a Gaza ceasefire and the release of detainees, and urged all concerned parties to fully abide by the terms of the agreement.
He stated that all detainees must be released in a dignified manner, that a permanent ceasefire must be achieved, hostilities must come to a complete end, and humanitarian aid and essential commercial goods must be allowed immediate, unimpeded access into Gaza. The United Nations will support the comprehensive implementation of this agreement and will intensify the provision of continuous and principled humanitarian assistance, advancing the recovery and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
Guterres urged all stakeholders to seize this significant opportunity to establish a reliable political path to end the occupation, recognize the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, and ultimately realize the “two-state solution,” thereby enabling both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security.
