(Kuching, 30th) — The trade relationship between Sarawak and Brunei continues to grow, with the total trade volume between the two places reaching RM3.39 billion in 2024, demonstrating increasingly active economic cooperation.
According to the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), Sarawak Deputy Premier and Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, stated that this figure reflects the deepening trade and economic ties between Sarawak and Brunei. Meanwhile, Sarawak's overall external trade for the same period totaled RM198.7 billion.
He pointed out that this achievement indicates that both local and international investors remain optimistic about Sarawak's economic strength and development potential, solidifying Sarawak’s position as a top investment destination domestically and abroad.
On October 28, during the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the “Rimbunan Kaseh Sundar Project” held at the Brunei Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office (STATOB), Awang Tengah said, “Sarawak is one of Malaysia’s most popular investment destinations. We continuously promote sustainable and innovative investments, bringing long-term benefits to the people and the national economy.”
The agreement was signed by LCDA Agri Business Sdn. Bhd. and Sahamada Corporation Sdn. Bhd., witnessed by Awang Tengah and Brunei’s Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, Dato Seri Setia Dr Abdul Manaf Metussin.
Awang Tengah, who is also the Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, said that Brunei’s strategic geographical location allows access to broader markets, while Sarawak’s abundant natural resources and skilled workforce continue to attract high-quality investments.
“Brunei possesses a sound business ecosystem and stable financial policies, while Sarawak is resource-rich, has a well-trained workforce, and enjoys political stability. By working together, the two places can further drive regional economic growth,” he said.
He also pointed out that both sides have enormous potential for cooperation in the green energy sector, which aligns with their mutual goals to promote sustainable and renewable energy—an area that is becoming a global focal point.
Awang Tengah further emphasized that the scope of cooperation between Brunei and Malaysia, especially Sarawak, should be expanded to venture into more high value-added, future-oriented industries.
Guests attending the ceremony included:
Malaysian High Commissioner to Brunei, Datuk Mohd Aini Atan; LCDA General Manager, Datu Sr Zaidi Mahdi; STATOB Chief Executive Officer, Samat Junai; Sahamada Corporation Adviser, Illias Matusin; Batu Danau Constituency Member, Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang; and other guests.
