‘Namiya’ Renowned Director Suddenly Throws Shade at Karry Wang After 8 Years, Slammed for ‘Clout-Chasing’

Chinese director Han Jie recently mentioned his past experience working with male star Karry Wang (Wang Junkai) on the movie ‘Namiya’ at a public event, but his surprising remarks have sparked heated discussion.

He bluntly stated that at the time, Karry Wang only provided a two-week window for filming, not only “wasn’t present every day,” but his attendance needed to be booked in advance, making the overall shooting process full of regret.

He further added that Karry Wang even brought his own acting coach, which led to communication breakdowns between actor and director regarding performance.

Han Jie also mentioned that his interactions with Karry Wang during filming were not deep, describing Wang's life as monotonous. “When on tour, I saw Karry Wang only playing video games and checking messages, unable to open up his heart,” implying he had some criticism for Wang’s performance. However, these comments immediately triggered backlash from many netizens, who felt the director’s statements were inconsistent and unfair. Some even dug up Han Jie’s completely different evaluations of Karry Wang during the 2017 promotion period for the film.

Back then, he publicly praised Karry Wang as “wise and calm, with self-awareness,” and even revealed that Karry Wang proactively suggested adjustments in key scenes, such as changing an emotional rooftop outburst from self-harm to an external release, demonstrating deep consideration for the character.

Furthermore, Karry Wang was said to have spent time researching welfare home documentaries to better understand his role, and sometimes discussed the script with actor Dong Zijian as early as 6 AM, showing strong professionalism.

When asked by fans at the time about Karry Wang’s performance, Han Jie even replied without hesitation: “Good, so good that I can’t bear to criticize him.” Now, with the director’s attitude completely reversed, many netizens are questioning his true stance, believing that he’s trying to gain exposure and clout by riding on Karry Wang’s current popularity.
