(China, 20th) On the morning of the 19th, Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the ground-breaking ceremony for the Lower Yarlung Zangbo River Hydropower Project, officially announcing the start of construction. Previously, India and Bangladesh had expressed concerns about a proposed super dam affecting local hydrology and opposed China's project.
Xinhua News Agency reported that Li Qiang attended the start of construction ceremony held in Nyingchi City, Tibet Autonomous Region, on the morning of the 19th. Li Qiang announced the commencement of construction for the Lower Yarlung Zangbo River Hydropower Project, officially kicking off the construction phase.
Representatives from the National Development and Reform Commission, the project owner China Yajiang Group, relevant research and construction units China Power Construction, and top officials from the Tibet Autonomous Region gave speeches in succession.
The report stated that the Lower Yarlung Zangbo River Hydropower Project is located in Nyingchi City of Tibet Autonomous Region. The project mainly utilizes a cut-off and tunnel diversion development method, constructing five cascade power stations, with a total investment of about RMB 1.2 trillion (approximately RM 709.378 billion). The generated electricity will primarily be transmitted out of the region while also meeting some of Tibet's local needs.
China approved the major infrastructure plan for the Lower Yarlung Zangbo River Hydropower Project at the end of last year. External estimates suggest that the power generation capacity of this "super hydropower station" could be three to five times that of the Three Gorges Dam. Previous reports from Hong Kong media mentioned that India and Bangladesh, both downstream of the Yarlung Zangbo, were concerned that the new super dam could affect local hydrology and had expressed opposition to China.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning previously stated at a press conference that the project has undergone decades of thorough research and will not have adverse effects on downstream regions. China will maintain communication with downstream countries and strengthen disaster prevention cooperation.
