(Kuching, 8th) Sarawak Deputy Premier and Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah, stated that the Bandar Lawas Bridge project has reached 97.2% completion and is expected to be finished in September this year. Upon completion, it will become an important landmark and transportation hub in the northern region of Sarawak.
According to TVS reports, the Lawas Bridge is a crucial part of the Northern Coastal Highway (NCH) network. Once completed, it will provide direct river crossing via Lawas town, allowing convenient commutes for residents on both sides of the river.
During a work inspection at the Bandar Lawas Bridge and the new building site of the Lawas PERKIM branch on Sunday (June 7), Awang Tengah said: “There are still some works to be completed, and we are also planning additional enhancement works to further beautify the appearance of the bridge.”
He said, "Upon the bridge’s completion, travel time to Lawas town will be significantly reduced, and it will provide a direct route connecting Merapok and Sabah. This is also part of the Northern Coastal Highway project.”
Awang Tengah is optimistic about the development potential the bridge will bring in the future.
He said that once the bridge is in operation, it will bring more development opportunities and promote balanced development on both sides of Lawas, including economic and infrastructure growth in the areas across the river.
