Macau Casino’s ‘Golden Avenue’ Sells 78 Gold Bars for Huge Profit, Earning 10 Times More

Capitalizing on record-high international gold prices, Macau Emperor Entertainment Hotel has dug out and sold up to 78 gold bars, weighing a total of 79 kilograms, from beneath its hotel lobby. The sale earned them HK$90.2 million (approximately RM46.57 million), representing a 10-fold return on their 20-year gold investment, with an average annualized return of about 12%.

Macau Emperor Entertainment Hotel opened in 2006 and is one of the city’s well-known early casino and hotel operators. To attract gamblers, they laid 78 gold bars, each weighing 1 kilogram and crafted from Swiss 999.9 pure gold, in the hotel lobby walkway, which they called the “Golden Avenue.” This became a popular attraction at the casino. Unexpectedly, the gold bars were removed overnight at the end of January 2026.

According to a report by The Paper, Emperor Entertainment Hotel Ltd. announced on the evening of February 4 that it had sold several gold bars totaling 79 kilograms, for approximately HK$99.7 million. Subtracting the book value of HK$940,000 (original purchase price) and transaction costs (including transportation and refining fees) of about HK$100,000, the profit amounts to around HK$90.2 million.

According to the official website of Emperor Entertainment, the hotel opened in 2006, is located in the center of Macau, and is palace-themed. Both sides of the main entrance are adorned with antique-style carriages, with golden bodies highlighting exquisite carvings, fully showcasing the artistic style of 18th-century Britain. The hotel features over 300 rooms, including Emperor Suite, Queen Suite, Royal Suite, and Executive Suite.

Emperor Entertainment Hotel stated that for the past 20 years, its casino in Macau created a luxurious and magnificent atmosphere—and enhanced its brand image—by paving the main corridor of the hotel lobby with these gold bars, drawing large crowds. Following the termination of its gaming operations last October, the group has been actively planning other entertainment and leisure facilities to enhance overall service experience and expand its revenue base.
