(Geneva, 18th) The 78th World Health Assembly will open on the 19th. Chen Xu, China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other International Organizations in Switzerland, refuted the manipulation of the Taiwan issue at the World Health Assembly on the 17th, stating that the WHO Assembly has rejected Taiwan-related proposals for eight consecutive years. He believes the international community will once again make the right judgment at this year's WHO Assembly.
Chen Xu attended a media briefing of the Chinese delegation at the World Health Assembly on that day. He stated that China's position on Taiwan region's participation in the World Health Assembly is consistent and clear, which must be handled according to the One-China Principle. This principle is also confirmed by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 and World Health Assembly Resolution 25.1. China firmly opposes Taiwan-related proposals.
Chen Xu pointed out that Taiwan-related proposals violate international law. The UN General Assembly Resolution 2758 recognizes the representatives of the Government of the People's Republic of China as the only legitimate representatives of China in the United Nations. Subsequently, the WHO Assembly Resolution 25.1 reiterated this, confirming China's representation in the WHO. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's recovery. At this crucial juncture, the DPP authorities in Taiwan, in collusion with a few countries, are acting against the current of history by proposing Taiwan-related proposals, challenging the fruits of victory from World War II, anti-fascist international documents, and the post-war international order.
Chen Xu stated that Taiwan-related proposals trample on basic facts. Under the One-China Principle, the Chinese central government has made proper arrangements for Taiwan region to participate in global health affairs. Over the past year, the Chinese central government approved Taiwan region's participation in 11 batches of 12 instances of WHO technical activities. Not a single Taiwan-related technical exchange that complies with the One-China Principle has been obstructed by the central government. The Taiwan region has an "International Health Regulations" contact point, and Taiwan experts have ample channels and platforms to access global health information and share domestic experiences. The so-called "gap in the international epidemic prevention system" hyped by the DPP authorities and a few countries does not exist.
Chen Xu stressed that Taiwan-related proposals go against international public opinion. The One-China Principle is a consensus widely accepted by the international community. 183 countries have established and developed diplomatic relations with China based on the One-China Principle. Recently, the vast majority of countries in the international community have reiterated their support for the UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, reaffirming their adherence to the One-China Principle, and have opposed Taiwan region's participation in the World Health Assembly. Many countries have expressed their understanding and support for China by sending specific letters to the Director-General of the WHO or by making public statements.
Chen Xu emphasized that the current global health governance is at a crucial stage of refinement and improvement, requiring countries to unite, carry out pragmatic and effective dialogue and cooperation. Some countries are using the Taiwan issue as a tool to contain China's development, manipulating the Taiwan issue at the WHO Assembly, which goes against the original intent of countries gathering at the Assembly, disrupts the normal order of the meeting, and undermines the atmosphere of unity and cooperation.
Chen Xu stated that the WHO Assembly has rejected Taiwan-related proposals for eight consecutive years. This year, he believes the international community will once again make the right judgment, and time will ultimately prove this point.
