Regarding the matter of halal certification applications, the MCA has called for the Kelantan government to re-evaluate the application methods and processes for the Halal Certification Certificate (SPHM).
Wendy, the MCA's Deputy Secretary-General and National Bureau of Publicity Director, made this remark during a recent meeting with Mohd Asri, a Kelantan state executive council member in charge of Kelantan Islamic development, propagation, publicity, and regional relations.
Wendy stated that the MCA urges the local government not to rush in implementing this policy, but to bring public concerns and opinions back to the negotiating table. She added that the MCA emphasizes the need to provide merchants with terms for delaying the acquisition of halal certification to allow them better preparation.
She pointed out that as a member party of the National Alliance, the MCA also suggests introducing different categories of business classification. “This means that different types of businesses should have specific halal classifications, and the related consultation fees or venue preparation fees should be adjusted according to these classifications to avoid imposing a one-size-fits-all policy on businesses.
Wendy indicated that both state and local governments must expand dialogue with relevant stakeholders to reach a consensus and implement more inclusive measures.
Meanwhile, Mohd Asri assured that the suggestions put forth by the MCA will be brought up for discussion in the state assembly.
Attendees included MCA National Youth Deputy Chief Lee Wen Hsien, and MCA Kelantan State SMEs Development Bureau Director Wong Kang Wen.
