KUCHING, July 10: The crocodile population in Sarawak is now estimated at around 25,000, with the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) ramping up efforts to reduce the risk of attacks, particularly in rivers identified as high-risk zones.

In a statement, SFC revealed that ongoing monitoring and habitat surveys showed crocodiles are widely distributed across more than 4,500 kilometres of river systems spanning 40 major basins in the State.
“This vast distribution poses significant challenges, especially in ensuring the safety of communities living or conducting activities near rivers,” said the agency.

In response, SFC has rolled out various proactive measures, including targeted crocodile removal operations in high-risk areas and the installation of warning signs at strategic locations to alert the public.

Additionally, the corporation continues to conduct outreach programmes with rural communities to raise awareness on river safety and necessary precautions when in crocodile-inhabited areas.

To facilitate swift response, SFC has also set up a dedicated hotline to allow the public to report crocodile sightings directly to the agency.

“These efforts are part of our long-term strategy to reduce human-wildlife conflict while ensuring public safety,” the statement added.
