AI-generated parody videos of celebrities are everywhere now, and even Stephen Chow (Star Chow) has gotten caught up in it! Chow’s manager, Chen Zhenyu, recently posted several screenshots of “AI Stephen Chow” videos on Douyin, bluntly raising a soul-searching question: “Aren’t these considered infringement?” This instantly ignited heated discussion online.
Chen Zhenyu pointed out that recently, many platforms have been flooded with AI-generated “Stephen Chow parody videos” and related tutorial content, with even more sensational titles like “AI Stephen Chow Gunfight Tutorial,” “Instant Stephen Chow AI Photo Generation,” and “Stephen Chow’s Unstoppable Firepower AI Creation Guide.” At first glance, it’s hard to tell real from fake, causing many netizens to mistake them for Chow’s newest works. What’s even more astonishing is that some creators are not only chasing views with these videos, but also seem to be directly profiting through platform ad revenue, ad-sharing, and even paid special effects features—essentially “making money from a celebrity’s face.”
In response, Chen Zhenyu took to Weibo again, directly asking: “I want to ask, does this count as infringement? Especially since it’s been spreading wildly these past two days, I believe the creators have already made profits. And is the platform just turning a blind eye, providing users with tools to generate and publish these videos?” The remarks clearly pointed towards platform oversight mechanisms.
