(Yangon, 11th) The Myanmar Election Commission announced that a total of 77 parties applied for registration, with 54 successfully registered and recognized.
Myanmar's private media 'Eleven Media' reported that on April 8th, the Election Commission announced that all political groups intending to participate in the end-of-year elections must apply for registration as political parties by the deadline of May 9th.
As of May 9th, the Election Commission received a total of 77 applications, among which 27 applications are from newly registered parties, and 50 applications are from re-registering existing parties. The Election Commission stated that it is reviewing the remaining applications to determine if they meet the qualifications to form a political party.
Although the Election Commission approved 56 parties for official registration, due to the cancellation of registration for the Shan State Kokang Democratic Party and the Mro Ethnic Party in 2023, only 54 parties are currently recognized.
Since the military coup in 2021 that overthrew the elected government, Myanmar's military has repeatedly promised to hold elections and return power to the people, but due to civil war, the national state of emergency has been extended multiple times, and the election has been postponed.
