Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with United Nations Secretary-General Guterres in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the 8th local time, stating that the current world has increasing instability and uncertainty, requiring the UN to play a greater role. Beijing firmly upholds the core role of the United Nations in global governance, and is willing to promote all parties to jointly practice genuine multilateralism and better advance the UN’s various undertakings.
According to Xinhua News Agency, during the meeting Li Qiang affirmed that the United Nations, since its founding 80 years ago, has made important contributions to maintaining world peace and security and promoting common development. He stated that China is willing to deepen communication and cooperation with the United Nations, and jointly promote the development of international order in a more just and equitable direction.
Li Qiang pointed out that the more complex the international situation becomes, the more necessary it is to uphold the authority of the United Nations; Beijing firmly upholds the core role of the United Nations in global governance, and is willing to promote all parties to jointly practice genuine multilateralism and better advance the UN’s various undertakings.
He said that facing the grave global security situation, China has made many efforts to encourage peace and facilitate talks in resolving hotspot issues and will continue to support the unique role of the United Nations in de-escalating tense situations.
Li Qiang believes that all parties should prioritize development on the international agenda, work together to strengthen global development cooperation, and to prioritize the allocation of resources to key areas such as poverty reduction, education, employment, and capacity building, in order to revitalize the global development partnership.
He continued that as a responsible developing major country, China will continue to unwaveringly expand its opening-up, share opportunities with all countries, and pursue common development. Beijing also supports closing the governance gaps in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, cyberspace, the polar regions, and outer space as soon as possible, and supports the United Nations in playing its primary role in this regard.
In addition, Guterres also thanked China for its long-term adherence to multilateralism and firm support for the work of the United Nations. Facing the current international situation, the United Nations looks forward to using its 80th anniversary as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with China, safeguard the authority of the UN Charter and international law, support multilateralism and oppose unilateralism, jointly tackle global challenges such as climate change, enhance global governance of artificial intelligence, and promote world peace and development.
