(Mukah, 7th) — A man was arrested by the police after wielding a machete and making threatening remarks in Melanau during a livestream on Facebook.
Mukah District Police Chief, DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias, stated in a press release today that the video, about 2 minutes and 16 seconds long, was uploaded by the Facebook account holder Syawal Mohamad. It was initially broadcast live and then quickly went viral on social media.
A 34-year-old man (believed to be the victim of the threat) lodged a police report at around 5PM that same day.
During the arrest, police seized a machete, a mobile phone, a car, a face mask, and the clothing worn by the suspect during the recording of the video.
Urine tests showed that the suspect, who is an e-hailing driver, was not involved with drugs.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 507B of the Penal Code (criminal intimidation via communication) and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
The police stated that they will apply for a remand order for the suspect today to facilitate further investigations.
Muhamad Rizal also reminded the public not to post or spread statements or content on social media that could cause public anxiety or panic.
