Handsome College Student Travels to Japan with Family, Goes Missing After Argument, Found Dead in Kyoto Mountains

(US 7th) A 20-year-old American college student recently traveled to Japan with his family, but during the trip, he had a heated dispute with his mother over his dissatisfaction with AI software like ChatGPT, developed by American tech giants, for massively occupying and wasting the earth’s natural resources. After the argument, he angrily separated from the group and walked alone into the wilderness, unfortunately going missing. After several days of search and rescue, his body was found on the 6th in the dense mountain forests outside Kyoto.

According to reports from foreign media, the deceased was James Higginbotham, a student at Auburn University in Alabama. He originally traveled to Japan with his parents and younger brother to celebrate his brother’s graduation. On May 29, he and his mother had a serious argument over whether they should use ChatGPT for navigating the trip, after which he left his family and started a solo adventure in Kyoto.

His parents tried searching for James’s location using the tracking app “Life360” and discovered that he had taken a train and visited several stores. They quickly messaged him to ask where he was going, but James immediately turned off his location sharing.

Subsequently, CCTV in Kyoto captured his last solitary moments. The footage showed him walking alone in the Yamashina district of Kyoto, heading along a secluded path toward a nearby forest hiking trail. Since he had made no preparations for wilderness survival prior to his disappearance, local police determined that his safety was in grave danger in the complex mountainous terrain, and on June 2 mobilized over 100 officers, police dogs, and helicopters to launch a full-scale mountain search.

However, the rescue operation was soon hampered by severe weather. That night, a strong storm broke out locally, causing a rapid deterioration of conditions in the mountains and severely hindering the rescue progress. After police concluded the legally limited 72-hour maximum rescue operation, James’s family did not give up. On the 6th, they hired a private professional search and rescue team and mobilized local Japanese residents to conduct a grid search of mountain blind spots that the police had not covered, ultimately finding his cold body.

James’s family mournfully announced his passing on Facebook, and expressed gratitude to those in the US, Japan, and around the world who prayed for him.
