Chinese actor Tan Kai, known for playing “Ying Hui” in the romance drama My Sunshine, opened a handmade dumpling restaurant in his hometown Qingdao this year. Many fans came to visit, but some customers complained that food was served too slowly and the wait time was too long. In response, Tan Kai specifically held a livestream to apologize.
Tan Kai’s dumpling restaurant is located in a convenient area with heavy foot traffic, and its open kitchen design allows customers to watch the entire dumpling-making process—from kneading the dough, preparing the filling, to wrapping, and cooking—all clearly visible. Unexpectedly, perhaps because many fans came to visit, the restaurant was packed, with lines forming outside as well. However, as customer flow surged, problems gradually emerged. Many customers complained, “the food takes too long to come out,” and “the wait time is too long,” with some even saying online, “I waited 40 minutes just to get dumplings.”
Faced with the controversy, Tan Kai apologized in a livestream on the 3rd: “It’s my first time running a restaurant, please give me some time.” He explained that all dumplings are handmade by the aunties on-site, and that currently, only a few employees are skilled while new staff are still in training. Tan Kai helplessly noted that even during the trial opening, the restaurant dining was already overwhelming and they simply dared not accept delivery orders.
