The Assembly of Experts of Iran issued a statement on the 8th, announcing the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as the new Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the statement of the Assembly of Experts said that during this period, the office of the Assembly’s Secretariat was bombed, resulting in the deaths of several staff and security personnel. Amidst intense warfare and direct threats from adversaries, the Assembly, in accordance with the constitution and its internal regulations, took the necessary measures, convened an emergency meeting, and selected a new leader.

The statement said the Assembly pays tribute to the wise governance of the previous two Supreme Leaders over the past 47 years based on the principles of dignity, independence, and strength. It also announced that, after deliberations and under the authority granted by Article 108 of the Iranian Constitution, the Assembly confirmed and announced, by an overwhelming majority vote of its representatives, Mojtaba Khamenei as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Iranian Assembly of Experts is the highest authority responsible for electing, supervising, and dismissing the Supreme Leader of Iran.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei died on February 28 in an attack on Iran by the United States and Israel.
