The “evolving Korean zombies” have successfully claimed the box office crown. Ten years after the huge critical and box office success of Korea’s “Train to Busan,” director Yeon Sang-ho returns with another zombie blockbuster in 2026. The new film, “Colony,” opened in Singapore on May 27, and after its first weekend, has already grossed 720,000 SGD; as of June 5, box office has officially surpassed 1 million SGD.
According to the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS), “Colony” has grossed a cumulative $28.19 million (about 36.19 million SGD) in Korea since its release on May 21, up to June 3, holding onto the box office champion position through its second weekend. The movie’s ability to attract audiences is believed to be closely related to its newly-upgraded “zombie concept.” This time, Yeon Sang-ho’s zombies are no longer brainless monsters, but have learned to evolve—capable of sharing knowledge and organizing themselves, becoming a new species. This brings a fresh feeling to the zombie genre.
The weekly top ten also features two new entries. One is the directorial debut by influencer-turned-director Annette Lee, titled “Dream Stall,” which ranked fifth. Annette Lee has promoted the film across her social media, even launching a “refund if dissatisfied” campaign. Whether this unconventional marketing will drive subsequent box office growth remains to be seen. Another new entry is the American thriller “Passenger,” ranking seventh.
With IP movies “Masters of the Universe” and “Scary Movie” joining the fray on June 4, the next box office ranking is sure to see new changes. However, with “Colony” demonstrating steady momentum, it is expected to hold its champion position.
