Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was sentenced to five years in prison in the first trial on June 16, on charges including obstruction of special official duties.

Yoon Suk-yeol is currently involved in eight criminal lawsuits. This day marked the first verdict related to his alleged insurrection case, and he will continue to stand trial for the remaining seven cases.

On January 13, the independent counsel had requested the death penalty for Yoon Suk-yeol in this case.

On the night of December 3, 2024, Yoon Suk-yeol suddenly declared emergency martial law, but the National Assembly passed a resolution lifting the martial law six hours later. He was impeached the same day. After the impeachment bill was passed by the National Assembly on December 14 that same month, Yoon Suk-yeol was immediately suspended from office. On April 4, 2025, the Constitutional Court of Korea unanimously ruled to dismiss Yoon Suk-yeol from the presidency.
