Concert Dress Code Guidelines Only Apply to Artists, Says Communications Ministry: Audience Not Affected

(Kuala Lumpur, 23rd) The Communications Ministry has stated that the latest concert dress code guidelines only apply to performing artists and do not include the audience.
The ministry’s Foreign Artists Performance and Film Screening Center Committee (Puspal) issued a statement on Monday (22nd), emphasizing that their 6.0 guidelines only stipulate dress codes and codes of conduct for performing artists.
“The guidelines do not set any dress or conduct requirements for attendees as audience members.”
Puspal also clarified that the earlier statement regarding audience dress was presented as constructive suggestions in cooperation with event organizers.
They stated that the primary focus of the guidelines is to ensure that the attire and behavior of performing artists are sensitive to Malaysia’s multi-ethnic society, a move that helps preserve national harmony.
Communications Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Strategic Communications & Creative Industry) Nik Kamruzaman previously stated that although the guidelines mainly target organizers and performers, they may be indirectly extended to the audience through the organizers.
Additionally, Puspal also reminded organizers to ensure safety and crowd management during performances, including monitoring alcohol and drug use before and after shows to prevent unpleasant incidents.
For more details on the guidelines, please visit Puspal’s official website, call 03-8911 5356 / 5384, or email puspal@komunikasi.gov.my to contact them.
Following a New Year’s Eve party in Selangor that resulted in four deaths due to ecstasy found in the victims’ systems, the Selangor state government subsequently suggested mandatory urine tests. However, as the proposal was not approved by the central government, it was not implemented.
As such, Nik Kamruzaman earlier pointed out that the authorities currently have no plans to implement mandatory urine testing measures, but organizers are required to implement a range of controls, including deploying trained security, conducting bag checks at entrances, and cooperating with police or enforcement agencies to deal with suspicious situations.
On the other hand, the Communications Ministry also reminded audiences to dress appropriately, refrain from causing disturbances, and respect Malaysia’s cultural and religious values.
