Indonesia Urges Online Taxi Drivers to Register for Social Security to Ensure Safety and Welfare

(Jakarta, 8th) Indonesia's Minister of Manpower, Yassierli, emphasized that online taxi drivers should promptly register with the country's labor social security agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) to receive necessary social protection, especially considering potential accidents during work.

Speaking at a seminar focused on the welfare of online taxi drivers on Thursday (May 8) in Jakarta, he mentioned that online taxi drivers, especially those riding motorcycles, face higher road accident risks and must obtain adequate social security.

"Without protection, if these drivers encounter accidents, they will face a heavy burden of medical expenses. This is a major concern for the government. President Prabowo is very concerned about the well-being of workers, including online taxi drivers," he stated.

BPJS Ketenagakerjaan President Anggoro Eko Cahyo, who also attended the event, pointed out that there are about 2 million active online taxi drivers nationwide in Indonesia, but only 250,000 have registered for social security.

"This means that 1.7 million drivers remain unprotected," he emphasized.

Cahyo urged all online taxi drivers to immediately register with BPJS Ketenagakerjaan to ensure they receive support in the event of work-related injuries. He stated the agency would provide economic assistance to drivers who are bedridden due to accidents, helping them and their families maintain daily life until they recover and return to work.

"Our goal is to ensure their families do not fall into hardship due to accidents, and their children can continue schooling," he said.

Additionally, he mentioned that if a driver dies due to work, their family would be eligible for compensation up to 42 million Indonesian Rupiah (approximately 2,500 USD).
